What are Micronutrients and Why Are They Important?

Better Black Health Podcast

Host: Dr. Greg Hall

Dr. Greg Hall discussed micronutrients, noting that a recent study showed that Blacks have the highest overall deficiencies.

Micronutrients?

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that our bodies require in small amounts to function optimally. They play crucial roles in energy production, immune system support, bone health, and the regulation of numerous physiological processes, including blood pressure and blood sugar control. Without adequate intake of micronutrients, people will experience deficiencies that can lead to various health problems.

Macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) are needed in large amounts for food and energy. That’s why the majority of our diet is meat, grains/bread, and pasta. But the micronutrients are just as important.

African Americans have the most micronutrient inadequacies across all populations, and supplement use is also lowest in our community. It’s remarkably low in low-income families.

Why are Micronutrients so Important?

This is because these nutrients are essential for the proper functioning of our cells, tissues, and organs. Micronutrients help prevent chronic diseases, reduce the risk of infections, and support overall well-being. As related to GNetX Sequence Multivitamins for African Americans, we refer to micronutrients as our “chemical core®”. Even though they are needed in small amounts, a lack of them can have significant negative impacts on health.

Where Do We Get These Micronutrients?

A balanced diet containing a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats is typically sufficient to obtain all necessary micronutrients, except for vitamin D, which our body produces when we are exposed to the sun. No sun exposure, no vitamin D. Low vitamin D is associated with hypertension, diabetes, infection problems, and many more bad things that are prevalent in the Black community.  A diet that is not rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains will need a supplement.

Can We Get Too Much of a Micronutrient?

Absolutely.  You can get too much of anything. It’s important to note that while food sources are generally safe, excessive supplementation of certain micronutrients can lead to bad outcomes. For example, too much vitamin A or iron can cause adverse effects, so it’s best to aim for the recommended amounts and consult healthcare professionals before starting new supplements.

Vitamin E supplements at 400 IU and selenium have been linked to increased prostate cancer in men, and African American men have, by far, the highest rate. GNetX Sequence Multivitamins for African Americans has NO vitamin E or selenium.
