BLACK MEN HAVE ERECTION PROBLEMS TOO!

Studies reveal that approximately 40% of Black men over the age of 40 experience some form of erection problems also called “erectile dysfunction.” This prevalence increases with age and with increasing chronic disease burden, affecting nearly 70% of Black men by the time they reach their 70s. Erectile problems can be issues with getting an erection, keeping an erection, or related to having an orgasm.

With all of the folklore associated with Black men and sexual performance, the truth is Black men have more trouble with erections compared to other races/ethnicities. With all of the increased health problems in Black men including heart disease, cancer, and prostate problems, it should be no surprise.

It has also been shown that Black men are less likely to talk to their doctor about erection problems compared to White men. Culturally, this is a very sensitive issue that needs to be addressed, and I find there is a lot of false information. I did a podcast called “Erection Problems and Black Men” and it’s below.

YOUNG MEN TOO?

Yes, young men can have erection problems too. Several factors can contribute, including stress, anxiety, and depression. Condom use, while helpful as a contraceptive, contributes to some men maintaining an erection. A study done in the South at an STD clinic found that one in five reported condom-associated erection problems.

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity also play a significant role. Additionally, underlying health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and hormonal imbalances can lead to erectile problems in younger individuals. I already written about there being more high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity in younger African Americans.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY CONTRIBUTES TO ERECTION PROBLEMS

I know you get tired of me tying everything to vitamin D deficiency, but if the research shows it, why keep ignoring it? A study in Nutrients found that people with lower vitamin D levels had more trouble with erections than those with normal vitamin D levels. African American men (and women) have widespread vitamin D deficiency. Just replacing your vitamin D to a normal level may have a big impact. Another study confirmed the connection between low vitamin D levels and erection problems

If you have diabetes, which is really high in the Black community, a low vitamin D also compounds the problems with erections another study found. Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which is common in African American men. Taking vitamin D supplements can help reduce the risk for a lot of common problems in the Black community.

ZINC HELPS TOO

Zinc deficiency and erection problems are also closely linked. Zinc plays a crucial role in the production of testosterone, a male sex hormone essential for sexual health and performance. Low levels of zinc can lead to reduced testosterone levels, thereby worsening issues with erections.

Erection Problems in African American Men

The recommended daily intake of vitamin D varies by age and health status. For most adults (majority White), the suggested dosage is around 600 to 800 IU (International Units) per day. Reserach shows, African Americans need 2000 IU to maintain a normal level. It’s imperative to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate dosage based on individual needs and health conditions.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HAS A HUGE EFFECT

Engaging in regular physical activity improves blood flow, which is essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. Exercise also helps reduce stress and anxiety, which are common psychological factors contributing to erectile dysfunction. Additionally, physical activity can aid in weight management and improve cardiovascular health, both of which are vital for overall sexual health.

DIET PLAYS A ROLE TOO

A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining sexual health. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and essential vitamins can enhance blood flow and hormonal balance. Incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your diet can support overall health and reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction.

IT COULD BE ALL IN YOUR HEAD

Erectile dysfunction in Black men can be influenced by various factors, including underlying health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which are more prevalent in this demographic. Additionally, socioeconomic factors and stress can also play a significant role in the occurrence of erection problems.

These issues can create a negative feedback loop where the fear of losing an erection makes the problem worse. Consequently, this can lead to decreased sexual confidence and avoidance of sexual encounters altogether.

DHEA

Erection Problems and African American Men

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is used to treat menopause and depression . . . and also used to improve athletic performance and increase energy levels. It can also help with erections. DHEA levels decrease with age and many believe the progressive problems with erections as they age are linked to this hormone.

Your body levels of DHEA are highest in your 20’s and 30’s and then decrease by 10 percent every 10 years. So by the time you are in your 70s, you have only a fraction of DHEA left.

It is important to be aware of the potential side effects of DHEA supplementation. These can include acne, hair loss, stomach upset, higher blood pressure, and changes in menstrual cycle for women. It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider before starting DHEA to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your individual health needs.

L-CITRULLINE, VIAGRA, and CIALIS

L-citruline is an amino acid that helps to reduce fatigue, improve athletic performance, and could help with erection issues. Watermelon is one of the richest natural sources of L-citrulline (who knew?) and the active ingredient in watermelon can increase blood flow to your penis. Other good sources include cucumbers, pumpkins, gourds, and squashes. Incorporating these foods into your diet can help boost L-citrulline levels and support overall health.

L-citruline helps to increase nitric oxide levels, which helps to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation. It helps blood flow throughout the body including the penis. Increasing nitric oxide levels is how prescriptions like Viagra or Cialis work. Unlike prescription medications such as Viagra or Cialis, L-citrulline is a natural supplement that can be taken without a prescription. While both approaches aim to increase nitric oxide levels to improve blood flow, L-citrulline may have fewer side effects and can be used as a daily supplement for overall vascular health. However, its effects may be less immediate and potent than prescription medications, which are designed to work faster and within a set time frame. Viagra is the brand name, and “sildenafil” is the generic name and it tends to work faster with less long-lasting effect. Cialis, or tadalafil, has a slower onset of action but lasts longer (a couple of days). Check with your doctor to get all the details and to make sure it is right for you.

Some potential side effects of L-citrulline include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, diarrhea, or nausea. Additionally, because it can lower blood pressure, individuals with hypotension or those taking blood pressure medications should use it cautiously. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

YOHIMBINE MAY HELP

Yohimbine is a substance derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree (native to Africa), and it has been traditionally used to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by blocking certain receptors that help improve blood flow to the penis and enhance sexual performance. It has also been shown to help heart health.

Given our African origins and genetic similarity, yohimbine might be a more natural choice for some Black men.

HORNY GOAT WEED

Horny goat weed, also known as Epimedium, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Please don’t ask where the name came from . . . but it does show promise. Its historical uses include treating fatigue, pain, and various sexual health issues, such as low libido and erectile dysfunction. The active compound, icariin, is believed to enhance blood flow and sexual function, similar to yohimbine and L-citrulline.

EAT YOUR “BEET ROOT”

Beet root has gained attention for its potential benefits in treating erectile dysfunction due to its high nitrate content, which the body converts into nitric oxide. This process helps relax and dilate blood vessels, improving blood flow throughout the body, including to the penis. There is no great research that shows it works as well as some of the other supplements I’ve listed, but it is certainly healthy, and it can’t hurt. The facts that beets can be tracked back to ancient African (Egyptians) may make this a better option for us. Additionally, beet root is rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that support overall cardiovascular health, making it a natural option to consider for enhancing sexual and athletic performance.
